St Philips worship is online
There are many ways you can give to St Philip's. Whether it is your time, talent or treasure we appreciate anything you can offer.
How can you help? St Philip’s depends on the growing number of volunteers who generously give their time to the church, whether by arranging flowers for Sunday services, serving drinks, reading lessons, serving on committees, or through many other ways.
St Philip’s is entirely self-funded, and we have a growing lay leadership taking responsibility for whole areas of the church’s life.
To make a one-off or regular donation please see below.
An important part of our faith, dating from Old Testament times, is the recognition that all we have comes from God, and we should feel encouraged to give back to him. Jesus discusses giving to the Temple treasury and in the Acts of the Apostles, we are told that the faithful sold goods and laid them at the apostles’ feet.
This giving is not only an expression of grace by the giver. From ancient days, the church throughout the world has depended on giving by its members in order to fund its work.
Nearly a hundred and seventy years ago, the people of this area gave enough money to build this church – a feat of generosity we could not match, and generations since have given substantial sums to keep it open and thriving.
We too have a role to play.
The team at St Philip’s works hard to use the inheritance from those who came before. Much of our income comes from hiring the various spaces. This brings the community to our building, and covers the majority of our costs. But we cannot live off our inheritance alone.
Every generation needs to play its part. We see this, week by week, as people put cash or envelopes in the plate. From time to time, we have run appeals, for the lights in the lower hall, the initial Zoom system, the glass doors at the West End and repairs to the Organ.
Your response has been magnificent.
But a critical source of income, for St Philip’s as for most parishes, is regular planned giving by its members, usually by bank payments once a month. This source funds over a third of parish income across the London Diocese. It is much smaller at St Philip’s.
Our regular giving has fallen in real terms due to inflation, people moving away and, sadly, deaths. It is now about 40% in real terms of its level of 12 years ago, for much the same size of congregation. We would like at least to double the current figure, through a combination of existing givers doing more and others participating for the first time.
There is no fixed subscription. We do not want people to give more than they can afford and there will be some members who can’t afford anything.
A Starbucks Latte costs £4. One a day would on average be £121 a month. At present, only two families’ planned giving exceeds this amount, and none reach £200 a month or more. In the past there have been quite a few givers at this level – could there be again? For others, £50 a month will be the right level. Or £100. We would like you to give what is right for you, and invite you to prayerfully consider what that might be.
Planned giving usually allows us to claim Gift Aid payments from the Government worth 25% of the sum we receive. And if you are fortunate enough to pay tax at the higher rate, you can get a discount on your tax bill too.
While hall hires cover the majority of our day to day costs, we need giving to build our activities.
We have a very good financial deal with the Diocese for Helen. But when her training ends, if we want another full time curate, we might need to find £50,000 a year to cover stipend and accommodation. That could only happen if this campaign is a success.
Beyond a curate, there are many other roles and initiatives we could consider to grow our activities and outreach. We could further develop our children’s ministry. The more we are able to raise from planned giving, the more we can do.
Whether you are an existing or new giver, Rupert will be pleased to advise and assist you.
If you are an existing giver and want to increase your giving, you can simply ask your bank to increase the monthly payment. Or we can give you a form to fill in and send to your bank.
For new givers, we have a variety of paper based and online giving options. Please talk to Rupert after the service or email him at treasurer@specr.org.

PGS is a simple and secure way to give monthly, quarterly or annually by Direct Debit. There is also an option to give a one-off gift. PGS is easy to manage, flexible and has benefits for the giver and the church. There is the option to have your giving adjusted with inflation and PGS manages Gift Aid on behalf of the church.
Regular giving in this way helps the finance team and PCC steward our finances well throughout the year.
